A wonder-strike from Radoslav Kovac put West Ham in the driving seat, before an Everton fight-back left the Irons out of the race for seventh place.

Two goals from Louis Saha and one from Joseph Yobo, as well as a sending off for James Tomkins made it a disappointing away day for the Londoners.

West Ham got off to the best of starts when Kovac's rocket - his first goal in England - flew past Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard from 30 yards.

But Tomkins' trip on Tim Cahill when the Toffee's midfielder was through on goal meant he got his marching orders. Saha tucked away the resulting penalty.

A second-half strike from Yobo edged Everton in front before Saha scored his second from close range.

Following the match, West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola said: "The players are very disappointed. But I am even more disappointed we have not been able to make seventh place.

"I am really pleased and proud to be their manager. Considering all the problems that were around the club, all the injuries we had, the players have done a fantastic job.

"I have promised them that next season we will be much better. I do believe that."
