Training simulations crucial for business success

Hall Marketing, based in Poplar, has been delivering cutting-edge training simulations to multi-national companies for over 30 years.

The programmes deliver a comprehensive range of computer simulations to develop management skills and business acumen, but all delivered in a compact and easy to understand format.

The company has been so successful it has picked up numerous industry awards over the years and regularly wins contracts ahead of bigger rivals.

But perhaps the most remarkable thing about the company is it is entirely run by one man, founder Jeremy Hall. He explained why his simulations have been so enduring.

He said: "This is a training tool and training is essential in any business, where success is based on what you do, not what you know. This allows you to practice the doing bit.

"Simulations help you better understand what your business is all about, what will work and what won't, and then applying the process to your everyday situation. It helps people think through their jobs."

The simulations present trainees with a range of scenarios to work through, usually in teams, to help develop problem-solving skills.

The software packages are simple to use and are designed to be run by in-house trainers, who have a deeper understanding of the business the models are being applied to. They are also short, which Mr Hall, 66, believes gives his company a particular advantage.

He said: "There is a pressure on training time these days so we have simulations that are as short as two hours, but they are still very effective.

"It means you have to be very focused on what the client's objectives are for learning and development and then build from there.

"Our approach is different from competitors in that our simulations are short and don't try to replicate the real world. The aim is to train the brain rather than provide the answer for every scenario."

Mr Hall got into the computer revolution early, starting his company in 1976, and moving it to Poplar in 1989. His programmes have been picked up by companies like HSBC in Hong Kong and the National Bank of Serbia.

Whether providing bespoke programmes, customising existing simulations or licensing models he has perfected over a 30 year period, Mr Hall believes he has something for everyone.

Some of the packages were so ahead of the game they have been in use far longer than the normal life-expectancy of most software.

"Technology always means change, but the basic business understanding has not changed. Kraft foods still use one of my packages they first used in 1984, which is remarkable. We're dealing with today's and tomorrow's problems."

The approach seems to work and in 2006 he was given an award by the World of Learning, the training industry's most prestigious recognition, for the quality of his product.

Mr Hall has no plans to retire and there is one area where he would love to help deliver training - Canary Wharf.

He said: "It's ironic. Although I do have clients in London, none of them are in Canary Wharf, even though it's on my doorstep.

"With all the big challenges facing the banks, providing useful training is perhaps more important than ever to try and avoid repeating these mistakes."
