Awareness is a word that's bandied around a lot at the moment.

We're always being asked to be more aware about this issue or that cause, and it can be tricky to keep track of which hot topic we're supposed to be caring about.

It's a big problem for the green movement, as it's easy to feel so overwhelmed by the enormity of the problems that you just switch off.

This week sees a great event taking place which aims to make us more aware without frightening us off or blinding us with science.

UK Aware is the brainchild of Danny Carnegie, a full time firefighter who somehow manages to find the time when he's not off saving lives to run a two-day exhibition on ethical living.

He probably wrestles bears too.

This year Danny has brought together an amazing line up of sustainable brands under one roof, including the Fairtrade Foundation, Greenpeace, Transport for London and the Soil Association.

Exhibitors will be demonstrating the latest developments in sustainable living and there's also a great line up of speakers including a panel on ethical investments.

You can book tickets, which are only a fiver, at ukaware.com. The show is on Friday and Saturday.

Of course, there are lots of other events like this which focus on sustainability, not least Grand Designs Live which is coming up at Excel at the end of the month.

Having recently hosted Gordon and Barack, the east end now welcomes Kevin McCloud and chums.

Last year the show had a whole range of areas devoted to sustainability, especially relevant at the moment as a sustainable home is also likely to save you money.

Look out for the Green Streets area of the show which is devoted to cutting carbon emissions and cutting your heating bills.
