Green Living: Prince's passion

Times are tough all round, and I'm often asked what effect the financial situation is having on the events business.

Of course there have been some high profile casualties, but like most agencies we're keeping our heads above water so far.

I always argue that our sustainable approach is particularly useful at times of financial difficulty, as reducing resource use and managing your business more carefully are key elements of being sustainable.

Of course the other thing about the current climate is that it opens some doors while others close.

Clients may be planning fewer parties or glamorous dinners, but there are plenty of agencies and organisations running events aimed at helping small businesses through the recession. One such takes place this week and has a particular focus on sustainability.

The Prince's May Day Summit takes place on Friday, May 1, and is organised by Business in the Community on behalf of the Prince of Wales.

The summit aims to get businesses together to take action on climate change, as well as offering advice to small businesses about how to make their operations more sustainable.

The London event takes place at Old Billingsgate and at time of writing is fully booked. However, in the true spirit of the digital age you can also take part online by logging on to the summit website. You should be able to hear all the keynote addresses, watch case studies and even pose questions to speakers over the internet.

This is the third year the summit has taken place and underlines the commitment which the Prince of Wales has to environmental issues.

He has a book and a film out later in the year which may even propel him to Al Gore stature in the environmental world.

If only his Duchy Originals pies didn't cost twice as much as Waitrose's own he'd be a true eco hero.
