East London loses phones after cable damage

BT is still trying to restore full phone and internet service around East London after a contractor damaged cables in a tunnel.
The incident affected 75,000 customers in the region at around 2pm on Saturday, and 25,000 are still waiting for their lines to be restored.
In a statement released today, BT confirmed "a third party" caused "significant" damage to cables while working in a deep underground tunnel. Those affected range from police to businesses and homes located in areas such as Ilford, Stratford and Canary Wharf.
It said: "BT's engineers are working around the clock to restore service as quickly as possible. BT would like to apologies to all impacted customers.
"Service has been restored to 50,000 customers, including police and other emergency customers, commercial customers and other communications provider circuits using alternative methods of connection.
"BT engineering teams are working to restore service to all remaining customers without service.
"Given the complexity of the damage suffered, it is not yet possible to accurately predict when all services will be restored."
