City returns to normal after day of protest

BankOfEngland.jpgThe City of London was cleaning up this morning after yesterday's mass demonstrations.

Protesters were thin on the ground, with teams of cleaners most in evidence as they scrubbed graffiti off landmarks like the Royal Exchange and Bank of England.

A heavy police presence was braced for any repeat of yesterday's occupation of the capital's financial heartland but they had very little to do.

Planned protests at the Stock Exchange failed to materialise while a march through the City towards Excel only attracted around 1,000 people - and they were well marshaled through the streets.

A City of London policeman told The Wharf: "We have been on standby all morning but there's nothing really happening here today.

"I think anything that happens will be over towards Excel but we are making sure people coming to work here today know we are around."

James, one of the protesters on the Youth Fight For Jobs march which passed the Bank of England at midday, explained why they were demonstrating.

He said: "We want to see more equality for people in general, with a minimum wage of £8 an hour given to everybody.

"We might not change anything with this march but we have to try. But it will definitely be peaceful."

And peaceful was the watchword as the City settled back into normality after being the focus of the media's attention for two days.
