Charlton lost a 2-0 lead for the second game in a row as Cardiff came back from the dead on Tuesday night.

The Welsh promotion hopefuls struck in the last minute to leave the south Londoners bemoaning a fourth consecutive draw.

A quiet first half saw few chances for either side.

The closest Cardiff came was when Michael Chopra fired a shot from inside the box and forced a superb instinctive save from Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

But it was the Addicks who went in front on 35 minutes.

Lloyd Sam had the ball on the right-hand side. His left-footed cross was deep and found Shelvey sliding in at the far post who guided it past goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

Moments later Cardiff's Joe Ledley struck a shot from 35 yards towards the top corner but Elliot made a great one-handed save pushing it on to the bar.

Charlton were the better side of the first period with some nice build up play but created few chances.

Eight minutes into the second half Charlton nearly got a second. A beautifully flighted ball by Shelvey found Zheng Zhi in the area, he cut inside and shot but the ball cannoned off the post.

Midway through the second half, after a good spell of possession from Cardiff, Gabor Gyepes nearly levelled the scores but his header from a free-kick went over.

On 71 minutes Jay Bothroyd thought he had equalised after taking the ball off Elliot in a fifty fifty challenge and putting the ball into the empty net but it was ruled out for a foull on the goalkeeper - much to the disgust of the travelling fans.

At this point it was Cardiff who were doing all the running, but it was the home side who scored.

A corner from Shelvey bounced up into the air and Nicky Bailey fired home the loose ball through a crowd of players.

Before there was time for the home fans to get comfortable Cardiff were back in it.

Substitute Chris Burke carried the ball deep into the Charlton half before firing a shot past Elliot from the edge of the area to make it 2-1.

Then with just one minute remaining Cardiff struck an equaliser.

The Addicks defensive failed to clear a corner and Cardiff's Gyepes turned and fired them level.

It was another two points lost for Charlton, although they have now gone six games unbeaten.
