The playoff lottery awaits Millwall after an away defeat against Bristol Rovers finally ended their automatic promotion hopes.

A brace from League One top scorer Rickie Lambert helped Rovers overcome the visitors, but results elsewhere confirmed the Lions' place in the top six.

Teams are slotting into place as the League One fixture list nears its final line, with Leicester securing top spot following a 2-0 victory over Southend. But Millwall's season will run a little longer, as they face the prospect of taking on three other teams for that prized third ticket to the Championship next season.

The South Londoners arrived in Bristol with a key win over Peterborough under their belts, but a disastrous first half all but ended their hopes of a victory. The first blow came on 12 minutes, when Stuart Campbell's corner was met by Craig Disley from less than ten yards out.

Both sides had opportunities to add to the score, but it was Millwall that leveled on 28 minutes, when Jason Price flicked a free-kick delivery into the goalmouth, where Jimmy Abdou rose to guide the ball home.

However, less than five minutes had passed before the Lions trailed again. This time it was Rovers' primary goal threat Lambert, who met Campbell's delivery from a corner kick routine with a short-range header.

Jo Kuffour then duped keeper David Forde with a deft strike off the left hand post after picking up a low delivery on 37 minutes. And the day hardly improved for Millwall when Gary Alexander was dismissed just before half time.

Referee Phil Gibbs decided that Alexander had deliberately stopped Lambert's goalbound effort with his hand, and gave the Rovers striker another shot at burying his second from the spot. The forward stepped up and calmly dispatched his team's fourth, and his 27th of the season.

The arrival of Neil Harris after half-time buoyed the Lions, and Chopper clattered the ball against the bar soon after stepping onto the pitch. Millwall continued to push forward as the second half continued, but found keeper Steve Phillips in good form on a few occasions.

The Lions did manage to bag another goal in the last 15 minutes. Jason Price laid the ball to Abdou, and he scrambled it under the keeper for his second of the game. Steve Elliott was sent off for a second bookable offence in the last ten minutes, but Millwall failed to eat into the home team's lead any further in the closing stages.
