It may not seem like the best time to go out on your own, but Parmjit Ghatoura is determined to make a success of her new business.

The 24-year-old beautician decided to quit her job at Urban Beach to go solo at the exclusive Canary Wharf development Discovery Dock.

Parmjit said: "I've always wanted to do this. I had built up a relationship with a client and she told me about this place.

"I had got to the stage where I thought I want to do something on my own.

"There's more freedom and there's definitely more thought put into this.

"It's my baby and I'm making sure everything is running properly. But it's fun."

Parmjit has worked for eight years as a beautician in spas and salons all over London, with her last job being at the Jubilee Place Urban Beach store.

Using products such as Hungarian organic and lycon hot wax, her Aspasia Beauty company is bringing a natural touch to the Canary Wharf beauty scene.

Renting an area from the management company allows her a steady stream of regular customers.

She said: "This is more residential services. It's convenient for the people who live here. But people who work in Canary Wharf can pop in. It covers both bases."

And does she have any worries about going out on her in business own during a recession?

"No, my prices aren't expensive. I know people don't want to spend much money, so we have to adapt. I also offer loyalty cards."

Aspasia Beauty is open from 10am-8pm Monday to Friday. Weekends 11am to 7pm.
