Palmer scoops Canary Wharf Classic crown

SP-apr2-Palmer.jpgJames Willstrop saw his reign as ISS Canary Wharf Classic champion brought to an end by David Palmer in Friday's final.

Willstrop, winner of the tournament for the past two years, looked weary as the 32-year-old Australian proved too strong and took the title in four games.

A packed house at the East Wintergarden were treated to some sparkling squash, which at times bordered on exhibition standard, as both players fought hard in the 65-minute match.

Palmer, twice a world champion, established his dominance early on, taking the first game 11-9.

He continued in the same vein in the second game although Willstrop fought back to take it to a tie-break.

But Willstrop, who had come through a marathon semi-final against Amr Shabana on Thursday night, seemed to lose concentration at the crucial moment, allowing Palmer to take it 12-10.

The Yorkshireman, who has been struggling with an ankle problem, came out fighting in the third and recovered from a 6-1 deficit to take it 11-7, producing some sensational strokeplay in the process.

The crowd, very much on the side of the defending champion sensed a shock comeback, but sadly for Willstrop it was not to be.

Palmer took advantage of Willstrop's weariness to open up a decisive lead and he took the title for the first time after clinching the game 11-7.

He paid tribute to Willstrop as he collected the trophy.

He said: "I know James has had injury and illness problems this year but to do what he has done this week is amazing.

"He is a superb player to watch and a wonderful ambassador for the sport.

"Our matches are always open and for two big guys we move around each other very well.

"I wish I was 22 instead of 32 as I watch these younger guys playing such great squash.

"I have said many times this week that I am still enjoying my squash as much as ever and will continue to play for as long as I can."
