A spirited performance wasn't enough to prevent Millwall from slipping to defeat against League One leaders Leicester City.

A Steve Howard goal settled the game for the Foxes, but the Lions didn't give the pace-setters an easy afternoon at The Den.

While the home team did not disgrace themselves against a side widely tipped for a quick return to the Championship, results elsewhere have left Millwall nervously looking over their shoulder once again.

Leeds United and Tranmere are looming large in the rear-view mirror after wins at the weekend. And Tuesday's opponents MK Dons will host Millwall with a spring in their step, after devouring Oldham 6-2 on Saturday.

Manager Kenny Jackett named an unchanged side again for the top-of-the-table clash, while former Millwall keeper Tony Warner was between the sticks for the Foxes after joining on loan on Friday.

While Alexander nearly stole in at the near post in the opening seconds for Millwall, Leicester racked up the corners in the opening five minutes. And it was the visitors who bagged the opener on 22 minutes, when Steve Howard drove in a masterful strike from 20 yards out.

There was a sniff of an elbow roughly a quarter of an hour later, as Howard was booked for a tussle with Tony Craig.

In the second half, David Forde had to act quickly to stop Tom Cleverly from doubling the lead with an angled shot, while Ashley Grimes' effort was blocked by Warner at the other end.

Leicester's Matty Fryatt thwacked the foot of the post around 10 minutes from time, but his side held on regardless for a confidence-boosting victory.
