HSBC's Canary Wharf logo will be switched off for an hour next weekend as part of a climate-change initiative.

The Canada Square bank has agreed to black out its distinctive beacon to promote the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour event.

WWF hopes to encourage businesses and homes around the world to turn off their lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm GMT next Saturday (March 28) in " the biggest global climate change action of all time".

HSBC has agreed to switch off lights where possible at its Canary Wharf and St James' Park offices, and let the charity occupy six floors of its Wharf HQ on Wednesday (March 11) to allow representatives to offer tips and guidance to staff on how to save energy. HSBC also provided plasma screens on each floor to show a film on the campaign to get world leaders to take immediate action on climate change.

Earth Hour is backed by the CBI and businesses including IKEA, Coca Cola, Standard Chartered Bank and Lendlease Centres.
