Excel to host world summit

The Excel Centre has been selected to host the London economic summit in April.

The exhibition centre in the Royal Docks will be the focus of world scrutiny when international leaders and finance ministers from across the globe meet there on April 2 to discuss the economic crisis.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office announced the news today.

The London Summit will bring together leaders of the world’s advanced and emerging economies, including the G20, and representatives of international financial institutions to work co-operatively to restore stability and stimulate global economic growth.

It will look at ways of reforming and improving financial sectors and systems and to deliver progress on the Washington Action Plan to build better financial systems and establish principles for reform of international financial institutions the International Monetary Fund, Financial Stability Forum and World Bank.

David Pegler, managing director of Excel, said: “This is fantastic news for Excel and London.

"We have been steadily attracting an increasing number of international and high profile events to our venue, many of which have rated Excel as their most successful event with the highest delegate and visitor numbers.

"The selection of Excel as the venue for the London Summit is testament to our international standing as a premier meeting and events destination.

“This validates our £160m investment in expanding our venue exhibition hall capacity and building the London International Convention Centre, opening in spring 2010.

"This will further cement London’s reputation as a world class city for hosting successful events and conferences and help in attracting even more high calibre international business to the capital.�
