A YOUNG Poplar woman was among the friends who died when their car veered off the A12 and hit a tree.

Ashley Plumber, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident on Sunday (January 18). Fellow passengers Nathalie Mithsud, 21, and Terry Pluck, 23 - who both lived in Bow - were also killed. Two other occupants of the vehicle are in hospital.

Police were called at 2.45pm following reports that a Mini Cooper travelling "at speed" had mounted the nearside kerb between the Barley Lane and Whalebone Lane junctions and smashed sideways on into a tree. London Ambulance Service and the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service attended, but were unable to save the three back-seat passengers.

The 20-year-old male driver is in a stable condition in an East London hospital. The front-seat occupant - a 20-year-old man - is in a similar condition. Police say the car was only fitted with four factory-fitted seatbelts.

No arrests have currently been made in relation to the incident.

Chadwell Heath Collision Investigation Unit's Sgt Mark Robson said: "This tragic incident has ended with three young people losing their lives needlessly.

"I would urge anyone who may have seen the car travelling along the A12 to call police and help us piece together the events that lead up to these deaths."
