Newcastle 2 West Ham 2

The Hammers dominated most of Saturday's game against struggling Newcastle but were denied a win when home striker Andy Carroll netted a late equaliser.

Goals from Craig Bellamy, against one of his former clubs, and Carlton Cole, his fourth in four games, seemed to have given West Ham victory despite having gone behind to a Michael Owen goal.

But Carroll's intervention left Zola feeling deflated, even though the Hammers are now unbeaten in four games.

He said: "Considering the way that we played, it's a little bit disappointing that we didn't win the game.

"We were playing against a very good team and, although they were suffering a lot against us, they kept trying until the end.

"They believed and they got the final goal that gave them their point. I can accept that but I think that my team deserved something more than one point."

And the Italian thought West Ham fans are starting to see the best of his side, a factor being reflected in the results.

He said: "The quality were are producing is high.

"We were excellent during the first 15 minutes of the second half but I think we can still improve in certain things.

"Sometimes we get carried away by our enthusiasm to want to try and score a goal if we can see something."

Owen put the Magpies ahead in the 19th minute with a rare strike from outside the box but the lead lasted barely 10 minutes before Bellamy levelled with a cool finish.

The Welshman latched on to Scott Parker's through ball to cleverly lift the ball over the advancing Shay Given.

West Ham began to dominate the match and were unlucky not to take the lead when Jack Collison saw his effort superbly saved by Given just after half-time.

The Irons also had a good shout for a penalty turned down after Sebastien Bassong fouled Bellamy as the visitors ran riot.

Cole eventaully put the Hammers ahead on 55 minutes with an excellent goal, catching the home defence cold with a smart piece of skill, and it looked like the visitors would hang on for another away win.

The luck seemed to be going West Ham's way when Lucas Neill scored a spectacular own-goal but it was ruled out for a push on James Collins by Steven Taylor.

Carroll, who had been a handful all afternoon with his aerial power, salvaged a point for Newcastle with a well-placed header past Robert Green.

And it was nearly a fruitless trip north as Gutierrez shaped to score in injury time, only for Matthew Upson to deny him with a superb last-ditch tackle.
