Josh Lewsey gives Millwall kids rugby masterclass
Millwall Rugby Club have signed up England star and World Cup winner Josh Lewsey.
But the club's opponents in Essex League Two can rest easy as he won't be lining up against them any time soon.
Lewsey, part of England's 2003 cup winning team, was awarded honorary life membership of the club when he visited their new headquarters in Millwall Park yesterday morning.
The Wasps star, who retired from international duty earlier this season, took the opportunity to do some coaching and watch Millwall's newest side in action.
He also called for all the club's age groups to be allowed to use the improved Millwall Park facilities, currently only enjoyed by the youth section.
He said: "I would be delighted to see these facilities made available for all ages to use within the local area.
"Millwall RFC's enthusiasm and desire is what makes rugby clubs a core part of their community.
"From the mums and dads serving food and working behind the bar to the volunteer coaches, they all help instil discipline, respect, teamwork and a sense of belonging that make rugby such a special sport."
Millwall's senior sides have to play their matches at Victoria Park or Hackney Marshes but are hopeful Tower Hamlets council will allow them to play at Millwall Park once the new clubhouse is completed.
Lewsey gave the club's under 13 side, playing their first ever game, a pre-match pep talk before watching them in action.
He also took a training session with the under-9 squad, most of whom took up the game after being involved in the star's rugby academy.
After signing autographs and posing for pictures Lewsey was shown around the new clubhouse before being presented with a club tie and being awarded honorary life membership.
