You should love this little number

If you like red Chateauneuf-Du-Pape but find the price difficult to swallow (unlike the wine), you should love this little number. Cairanne is one of 18 specific named villages within the Cotes Du Rhone Villages region.

Of course, at the region's heart is the most famous village of all Chateauneuf-Du-Pape.

The year 2007 was a relatively cool year in the Rhone Valley, saved by an Indian summer that allowed full ripening from better terroir (soil, drainage, exposure to the sun’s ripening rays) and lower yields from gnarled old bush vines.

The nose is deep scented (spicy, blackcurrant jam) and the palate reminiscent of tangy, dark fruits. A long lingering aftertaste (the juices from recently roasted beef?) indicates the quality in the glass.

Enjoy with most red meat dishes, particularly hearty casseroles seasoned with herbs. Keep winter at bay with warming reds.
