Winter workouts can be a breeze

Even though winter’s here there’s no reason to confine your workouts to the gym.
Just follow our tips to staying comfy in the cold.
Watch what you’re wearing. Layers are the way forward – several thinner layers are warmer than one heavy one. Wearing layers means it’s also easier to add or remove items of clothing and is therefore easier to regulate your core body temperature.
Stay warm when you’ve finished. Get inside and change into warm, dry clothes as soon as possible. Once you’ve stopped moving your body temperature will drop quickly. Standing around in the cold in sweaty clothes is a recipe for ill health.
Keep your head covered. Believe it or not, heat lost from the head and neck accounts for as much as 50 per cent of the overall heat lost from your body. Think about wearing a hat or covering your face with a scarf especially if you suffer with a sore chest or asthma-type symptoms when exercising outdoors.
Stay hydrated. Did you know that becoming dehydrated affects your body’s ability to regulate body heat and also increases the risk of frostbite. It may seem unbelievable but fluids are as important at this time of year as they are in scorching temperatures.
Get a proper warm-up. Warming up before you start your exercise is important at any time of year. It means you have a reduced risk of injury. When it’s cold, you need to increase your warm up time.
