JAPANESE inspired fairytale art has come to Canary Wharf with artist Lizzie Thomas’ paper trees on show at Cabot Place East this month.

The paper-based exhibition in the mall was inspired by an exchange trip to Japan for the recent graduate of Brighton University.

Lizzie said: “I went to Japan in my second year at university after winning a place on an exchange. It was fantastic and a huge inspiration.

“My work celebrates the moment when something hidden is revealed. I fell in love with working with paper while living in Japan.

Influenced by paper folding and cutting techniques, the 23-year-old who studied wood, metal and ceramics at university, uses 2D to create 3D through layering wood and paper.

She said: “Playing on scale, I harness the performing qualities objects can have to deliver a surprise to the viewer.

The forest feel of her work has also led to Lizzie creating her own fairytale story.

She said: “The forest in a fairytale is unique to each of us. We create it. I am writing my own tale about a woodsman who crafts his own forest from wood.

“Using traditional carpenters folding rulers, I have created pieces that illustrate his efforts.

“The pocket-size rules spring up to create a shadowy forest that moves.

The exhibition called In Your Pocket will run until November 28.

The pieces are on sale to Wharfers and Lizzie said: “Hopefully the exhibition will raise my profile in the Wharf and also encourage people to buy my art as gifts for Christmas.
