West Ham 1 Everton 3
West Ham threw away another lead as they fell apart in the last 10 minutes against Everton.
The 3-1 home defeat, in a game they should have won, highlighted the shortcomings in Gianfranco Zola's team, and leaves the Hammers sliding down the Premier League table.
Two goals from Louis Saha and one from Joleon Lescott broke Hammers' hearts when they looked like claiming a long overdue home win and keeping a clean sheet for the first time in 26 games.
It had all looked so good for West Ham as they dominated Everton for 80 minutes, with the visitors rarely threatening Robert Green's goal.
Jack Collison scored an excellent goal to put the home side 1-0 up in the 63rd minute. The youngster cooly curled the ball home after Scott Parker's clever backheel set him up in the area.
But defensive lapses cost them dear, with makeshift right back Julien Faubert guilty of two mistakes that contributed to Everton's second and third goals.
Zola's men began to defend too deep after taking the lead and paid the price when Lescott, who had stayed up after a corner, powered home a close-range header on 83 minutes afte Saha was allowed to cross from the right.
Two minutes later Everton took the lead. Faubert tried to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick but allowed himself to be robbed. The ball went across the field and Victor Anichebe crossed for Saha to ping a shot goalward which went in off the upright.
The Hammer and their fans were stunned and the away win was sealed on 87 minutes when Faubert's poor pass was intercepted by Saha 25 yards out and he smashed a shot past the despairing Green.
West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola will have a lot to do this week to sort out his side before the visit of Portsmouth next Saturday. For the second week running the Irons have conceded late goals and dropped points.
He said: "The only thing I can say right now is we need to find a solution because it is a pity that in the last 10 minutes we spoil 80 minutes of a very good job, and I’m not only talking about today.
"We are going to be looking for solutions during the week but right now I don’t have any solutions.
Matthew Upson picked up a dead leg during the game and was substituted as a precaution.
The loss of the defender is a blow the Hammers can ill-afford but the lack of goals from his side is something that will be worrying the manager even more.
