Wearing your conscience on your sleeve

By Andrew Williams
Thursday, November 13, sees a new event taking the spotlight on London’s fashion scene. The Re-Fashion Awards take place in Shoreditch Town Hall and celebrate all that is great, glamorous and green in the fashion world.
A host of stars are set to strut their stuff on the catwalk as part of the event, including Daisy Lowe, Katherine Hamnett and Pixie Geldof.
Re-Fashion is the world’s first dedicated awards for eco fashion. Many consumers are now looking for alternatives to the mass produced racks of copycat styles, and increasingly shoppers are taking an interest in where their clothes are coming from.
A pair of jeans for a fiver may feel like a bargain but you can be sure that someone somewhere is paying the price. Ethical fashion is all about paying a fair amount for what you buy and making sure that the profits are spread honestly through the supply chain.
Eco fashion would be a non starter if the clothes looked awful though, and no-one wants to be clocking in wearing a kaftan. Thankfully, there is a growing range of ethical clothing retailers who combine style and sustainability. Howies, American Apparel and Terra Plana aren’t just tree hugging options, they’re also cool labels to be seen wearing.
There are 12 categories at the awards tonight, from Fashion Designer of the Year to top Model of the Year. Whoever walks away with the gongs you can be sure that the real winners will be small suppliers and producers who are striving to give fashion a conscience.
