The festive season is upon us

There’s no point putting it off any longer. This week we will move into December and even the most solemn of Scrooges will have to accept that Christmas is upon us. The way the shops have been decked out for the past month and a half may suggest that we have been in the festive season for some time.
I’m a strict traditionalist when it comes to Christmas though, and our office will remain a tinsel-free zone for a good couple of weeks yet.
Even in the current financial climate, the excesses of what we now call “the holiday season don’t seem to be diminishing.
Consumers may have less cash in their wallets, but stores are responding by slashing prices. The overall levels of consumption remain incredibly high.
Over the next four weeks I’m going to highlight some of the little things you can do to make your Christmas more sustainable.
This isn’t about swapping toys and turkey for a bit of coal and sackcloth and ashes, it’s a chance for you to regain some sanity.
It’s all too easy to get caught up in the frenzy of spend, spend, spend, and taking a step back from that to draw breath can help you to make more of time with your family and actually enjoy the true spirit of Christmas.
Whatever Christmas means to you – be it kids, crackers or carols – you’re not going to enjoy it if you’re knackered, grumpy and broke come Christmas Eve.
Next week I’ll look at some of the gifts and toys which could make Christmas more special for you and yours without causing damage to other parts of the world.
Knowing that you’re helping to make the planet a slightly better place should be a gift we can all enjoy at Christmas.
