HSBC is giving Tower Hamlets youngsters something other than money to bank on after signing up for a mentoring scheme.

Volunteers from the Canary Wharf-based bank have stepped in to offer careers advice and guidance to 60 students from Stepney Green school.

The business mentoring scheme, run by Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (EBP), will see each mentor meet a group of three or four boys every month to help them develop the skills needed in the business world and identify their career goals.

One volunteer is Steve Bechold, a payments centre manager.

He admitted he was looking forward to the new challenge after meeting three of the four boys he will be mentoring earlier this month.

He said: “I thought they were great. They seemed very switched on, very excited and very keen.

“I’m really keen on giving something back to the community.

“I have a 12-year-old at home who goes to school in a leafy suburb so I thought I’d try and help those from an inner-city school.

Business mentoring in Tower Hamlets is sponsored by Deloitte, City of London and Goldman Sachs.

Volunteers from 12 different companies, including Canary Wharf-based Clifford Chance and Citigroup, presently mentor students in 11 of the borough’s secondary schools through the scheme.
