There are two types of pizza cutters, writes Lucia Blash.

The pizza wheel is the more common of the two.

The device features a sharp-edged wheel that when rolled across a pizza slices it.

The mezzaluna is a large curved knife that is rocked back and forth to cut the pizza.

Both cutters were invented to maximise pizza slice potential. They are used instead of a knife to avoid dislodging loose toppings.

The back and forth motion of the blade works better than a knife because it cuts vertically.
