Learning golf – 2 The Half Swing

As any golfer will tell you, if you want to climb the corporate career ladder or clinch a business deal then knowing how to handle a Big Bertha or being able to sink a 40ft putt can help, writes Lucia Blash.
The fairway has long been the place where promotions have been secured and business deals struck.
But what if you’ve never picked up a club or set foot on a golf course. How do you get started?
Director of golf at City Bunker Pete Fuller reckons he can take anyone and turn them from a beginner into a confident and competent player.
In his Wharf column, Learning Golf, the PGA pro passes on his knowledge through a step-by-step guide.
From the basic set-up and swing to club selection and trouble-shooting around the green, all aspects of learning – and mastering – the game will be covered.
Tiger Woods watch out!

It is important that the half-swing or waist-high position is correct before moving on to the full swing. If you master the basic position at this stage the rest of the swing will follow through. Before you start the swing take a deep breath and relax.
Engine of the swing. The engine of the golf swing is the back, torso and shoulders so it is imperative to start the swing by moving the left shoulder away. As the left shoulder turns, the waist will follow and the arms will guide the club head straight back from the ball on your target line. At the waist-high point you need to remember five important points:
1. The shoulders and hips should have turned about 45 degrees. 2. The weight should be starting to build up on the inside of the right foot and right knee. 3.Hands and arms should have maintained their relationship with the body as they were at address. That is left arm straight and right elbow relaxed with a slight bend. The elbows should be slightly squeezed towards each other. 4. Shaft of the club is parallel to the target line and about waist high. 5. The toe of the club should be pointing towards the sky.
Stop and then repeat. It is important to stop at waist high and check these positions first. Then go back to the ball, breath and relax before you make the half-swing without stopping.

Mirror image. The follow through is a mirror image of the backswing. As you approach impact you must make a descending blow on the ball, trying to brush the mat underneath.
Eyes focused. When you do your initial check don’t watch the club go back. You can check your position when you have reached waist high. When you then do the swing without stopping you must keep your eyes fixed on the back of the ball until you have almost reached the follow through position.
Impact. Make sure your impact position is not too wristy. They must be strong but relaxed. Extend the arms through to your target as you turn the torso through.
