CHARLTON'S defence got a much needed boost before Monday night's transfer deadline.

Portsmouth defender Martin Cranie has signed on loan until the end of this year.

The England under-21 international joined the Addicks just 20 minutes before the the deadline on Monday, September 1.

He is expected to be joined by Linvoy Primus, but his move is being delayed until after the transfer window.

Primus, also from Portsmouth, is set to move after September 8, when he can be brought in as an emergency loan for up to 93 days.

Meanwhile, Zheng Zhi, who was heavily linked with a move to West Bromwich Albion or Hull City, remains at Charlton after a deal could not be completed.
