Arson attack sparks Island fears

Fires on the Isle of Dogs have left residents fearful their homes could be a target for arsonists in the future.
MORE visible policing has been called for following two huge blazes on the Isle of Dogs which have left residents in fear of arson attacks.
In the last few weeks, an empty vicarage and a vacant pub have both been gutted by fires which residents believe were the work of arsonists.
While the Fire Service is investigating both incidents, police are only investigating the second as a criminal act.
Now residents are worried more fires could start near their homes.
Councillor Peter Golds said: “I think a bit of more visible policing would be helpful. People want to know that these incidents are being investigated.
“This is a heavily built-up area on the Isle of Dogs. There are three big tower blocks on the Barkantine estate. What if something happens around there and someone is stuck 23 floors up?
The first incident took place in Strafford Street, on August 27, when a vicarage connected to St Luke’s church caught fire twice in the same day.
The second, which is being investigated by police, was on September 14 at the Anchor and Hope pub in Westferry Road, next door to Millwall Fire Station.
But Cllr Golds, who raised the issue with police last week, believes both incidents should be investigated.
He said: “The level of spontaneous combustion was minimal which tends to suggest foul play.
Speaking after the fire at Strafford Street, which is not being treated as a crime, neighbour Rita Beasley, said: “It just seems strange the police are not investigating it because it couldn’t have set light to itself.
Julie Angus from Tower Hamlets Police said officers did attend the first incident but it was treated as non-suspicious.
