THOUSANDS of bikers will descend on the Excel Centre this weekend in a bid to make sure the victims of the July 7 bombings are not forgotten.

This Sunday is the third time the Unity Ride has taken place, which was launched by staff at University College London who lost a colleague in the attacks.

Tracy Boot, a teacher for the pharmacology department and a doctor at the college, Steve Marsh, who ran to the scene to treat victims, were pivotal in beginning the Unity Ride.

It was the death of Gladys Wundowa, a cleaner at the university, which was the catalyst for the event.

Tracy, 31, from Greenwich, said: “We found out a couple of days after the bombings that one of the ladies who worked here was killed on the Tavistock Square bus.

“Gladys was such a nice lady always saying hello. It was a huge shock for all of us.

“Steve said he wanted to do a ride across London and go back to his place for a barbecue for all the victims.

“That ended up on a forum and then 3,500 people turned up.

It was meant as a one-off but the organisers were encouraged to repeat the act by the families of victims, so in 2007 they rode again.

Each rider pays £5 to join the event with charities, including Children In Need and volunteer blood transport service Serv, receiving the proceeds.
