Report: Charlton 0 Yeovil 1
ALAN Pardew was left fuming after Charlton crashed out of the League Cup at the first hurdle with a defeat against Yeovil Town.
The Addicks were on top for most of the game against the injury-hit Division One side but lost out to a first half goal from Paul Warne.
Charlton had made some changes with Mark Hudson, Therry Racon, Andy Gray and Nicky Weaver rested following Saturday's win against Swansea.
Rob Elliot, Hameur Bouazza, Scott Wagstaff, Yassin Moutaouakil and Grant Basey were all brought into the side.
Charlton started strongly and should have taken the lead when Bouazza latched on to a back pass on six minutes only to see his shot well saved by Yeovil keeper Josh Wagenaar.
The Addicks looked in control and on 23 minutes Jonjo Shelvey nearly scored his first Charlton goal when a crossed free kick eluded everyone before coming back off the post.
But it was Yeovil who got the goal with their first attack of the game just four minutes later.
A long throw from Lee Peltier fell to Warne who had space from nine yards out to leave Elliot with no chance.
Charlton came close to an equaliser on 36 minutes when Matt Holland fired a shot in from 20 yards only for Wagenaar to turn the shot on to the post.
Half-time saw Lloyd Sam come on for Wagstaff, who had been largely ineffectual, but there was no change in the Championship side's fortunes.
The second half saw Varney go close with a header and Basey having a free-kick saved by Wagenaar.
Yeovil defended strongly and Charlton's lack of height from corners meant goalkeeper Elliot joined the attack for four late set-pieces, but it was to no avail.
More bad news for Charlton came when Jon Fortune suffered a hip injury, leaving him a slight doubt for Saturday's match against Watford.
After the match, a disappointed Pardew said: "There's a few question marks about a few squad members and only they can answer it by the way they perform from now on.
"It's disappointing after Saturday. One or two deserved a chance after the work they've put in pre-season and in training but unfortunately they didn't take it so in some ways it makes my job easier in picking the side against Watford.
"There was some dysfunctional stuff played tonight that wasn't very pleasing on the eye. I felt in midfield we look like we need some strength so there's a couple of question marks there."
