PLANS for a new hotel on the western end of the estate could be cleared for construction today (Thursday).

Canary Wharf Group is keen to re-develop the car parking area next to Heron Quays and have had plans for a 150-bedroom hotel with 78 serviced apartments drawn up.

Its application is due to be considered by Tower Hamlets Council’s strategic development committee later this evening.

No objections to the proposal have been filed, either by planning officers or by local residents.

A financial contribution of £915,284 is expected to be made to the council as part of the deal, with £356,835 going towards employment and training and £144,449 towards the improvement of open-space.

These improvements may include a cafe, visitor centre and public toilets.

The application for Newfoundland was filed by CWG subsidiary South Quay Properties in March as a potential venue for “business tourism, while the apartments will provide “short-term accommodation for the international business sector.

While the west side of Canary Wharf has not traditionally attracted as many visitors as other areas of the estate, it has been the subject of heightened interest from developers in recent years. Glenkerrin is pushing for a 63-storey tower on the site of the City Pride pub in Westferry Road, and Canary Wharf Group themselves are planning to develop their own office complexes at Riverside South and Heron Quays West.
Newfoundland will feature 1,300 square metres of retail at ground and basement level, as well as a 1,580 square metre restaurant on the first floor.

A training and education centre measuring approximately 2,310 square metres will appear on the second and part of the third floor.

Subterranean pedestrian access will be provided to the Jubilee Place retail mall, which is also earmarked for re-development.

Canary Wharf Group are hoping to convert 2,800 square metres of service area and 9,684 square metres of car parking into shops and cafes, resulting in the loss of 366 of the mall's 650 car parking spaces.
The plan is part of a wider retail expansion which is already taking place at Churchill Place and Canada Square.

The Jubilee Place plan was approved by the council’s development committee yesterday evening (Wednesday).
