Bill rises for hotel bid

CANARY Wharf Group may have to pay a little more to see its dreams of a hotel to the west of the estate come true.
Planners dealt an unexpected blow to subsidiary South Quay Properties' vision for the 37-storey Newfoundland development at a meeting on Thursday night, opting to defer the application in a bid to secure more financial contributions for the surrounding area.
The bid for Newfoundland, which would feature 150 hotel rooms, attracted no objections during the consultation process.
But the board were not satisfied with the pledged Section 106 contribution for the development, which would have amounted to £915,284 including £356,835 for employment and training and £144,449 towards open space improvements. Councillors believed the figure did not fully compensate for the impact of the 38 planned serviced apartments, which would be used by visiting businessmen for periods of a few months.
