THE HISTORIC SS Robin steamship has left its Canary Wharf moorings for the first time in 17 years.

West India Dock's Grade I trader was towed through South Dock to Thames Quay early on Saturday (June 14) as it prepares to steam off to Lowestoft for essential hull work later this month.

It will return to its long-time home at the end of the year, where it will be sealed in while preparatory work begins on the long-awaited Isle of Dogs Crossrail station. SS Robin trustees agreed a £1.9million compensation deal with Crossrail to fund the works, which will help it continue as an education centre for area youngsters.

West India Dock will be sealed off with a cofferdam and partially drained to allow construction to take place. The station is expected be among the first to open when the £16billion London rail link starts running from 2017.
