New tenants sought for housing co-op
A COMMUNITY leasehold scheme offering quality low cost housing in Poplar is seeking applications.
Glenkerry Co-operative Housing Association Ltd aims to bridge the gap between renting and home ownership.
It has been successfully running since 1979 and is a non-profit making organisation.
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets owns the building but Glenkerry residents are not council tenants.
Instead, they are classed as shareholding members and they form the management committee, supported by various sub-committees, including finance and maintenance, and between them the residents manage and maintain the block.
Glenkerry House was designed by renowned architect Erno Goldfinger. The Hungarian born pioneer was one of the founders of the Modern Movement in the UK and many of his buildings have attained listed status.
Glenkerry House has 13 storeys with 79 flats in a variety of sizes from one to four bedrooms. From the upper floors there are spectacular views.
There is communal central heating, a laundry room, a telephone entry system, security lighting and CCTV. There are excellent transport links with Langdon Park DLR within two minutes walk, and off street parking.
The cost of each flat is fixed at 50 per cent of the full market value as assessed by the District Valuer. So, if the District Valuer determines the value at £125,000, the mortgage required by the resident would be £62,500.
The monthly service charge includes costs for heating, maintenance, buildings insurance, painting and cleaning the interior and exterior of the building and staffing costs.
This year the block will undergo an internal and external repaint, and the installation of a digital aerial.
Glenkerry welcomes new applicants who are interested in the principles of co-operative housing and who are willing to play an active part in the co-operative.
Applicants should be able to afford mortgage and service charge repayments and have faced difficulties in purchasing their own home or be in housing need.
