City pride pub to become uk's tallest residential tower?
THE UK’S most expensive pub could soon become the country’s tallest residential tower.
Irish developer Glenkerrin has unveiled ambitious plans for a 63-storey building on the site of the City Pride pub in Westferry Road, which it acquired for a reported £32million this spring.
It may not appear to be the case from the view in the rendering released by Glenkerrin, but The Pride would be a significant presence on the Canary Wharf skyline.
At 209 metres high, it will be the UK’s tallest residential building, dwarfing the planned 172-metre Lumiere tower in Leeds and the Wharf’s own 152-metre Pan Peninsula apartments.
One Canada Square is Canary Wharf’s tallest tower at 244 metres, while the planned Riverside South development’s tallest tower will be approximately three metres shorter at 241metres.
The development, currently known as The Pride, will contain a 200-bedroom five-star hotel, 410 residential units ranging between one and three bedrooms as well as eight luxury penthouses.
As reported in The Wharf in April, the 1950s former dockers pub is set to disappear, but Glenkerrin has not yet set a date for its closure.
A design for the development (pictured right) has been cooked up by renowned architect Foster and Partners, who are also responsible for Canary Wharf tube station and the UK headquarters of HSBC in Canada Square, which was sold for a record £1.1billion last year.
Interested parties will be able to view and comment on the plans when a project website launches at www.the-pride.co.uk on Tuesday.
There will also be a series of public exhibitions at the Marriott Hotel in West India Quay.
The plans will be on display from 4pm to 8pm next Thursday, July 3, from 4pm to 7pm on Friday, July 4, and from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, July 5.
The 2,525 square metre site at 15 Westferry Road was snapped up by property firm Oracle Group last year, but it claimed it was “not in any rush” to cut short the pub’s lease. But Glenkerrin has indicated that if the public reaction is favourable, a planning application could be submitted to Tower Hamlets Council as early as the end of the year.

Stop the madness now! Anyone would think that the planning department of Tower Hamlets on a back-hander to keep approving more and more buildings, to the detriment of local facilities and people (posisbly to get more council tax?)
The infrastructure needs working on first.
We have 34,000 residences going into one overloaded telephone exchnage.
We have a town on the Isle of Dogs nearly the population of Hastings but only a part-time police station.
This building will be a great addition to the Docklands area. It will enhance Canary Wharf's skyline and add to its international prestige. The building will offer quality accomodation to local workers. Surely the UK’s tallest residential building belongs in London and not in Leeds!
The council and developers need to work together on improving the roads and access/exits to and from the Isle of Dogs.
There is little point in piling thousands more residents on a virtual island that was not designed for such traffic.
Throughout the last 5 years or more, traffic has come to a standstill too often due to constant roadworks and closures which does little to improve the current conditions.
I agree with David, that Tower Hamlets needs to step up to help improve the infrastructure not just give permission to cover everything up with glass buildings and lights!
This development will also enhance the divide between the rich and poor residents of the Isle of Dogs. More needs to be done to ensure 'affordable homes' are actually affordable to the local residents.
