Tory glory in Island by-election
THE CONSERVATIVE party maintained their grip on the Isle of Dogs with a comfortable victory in Millwall ward.
Tory candidate David Snowdon picked up nearly half of the vote to retain the seat, which was vacated by former blue borough leader Simon Rouse earlier this year.
Labour's Fazlul Haque took Weavers ward from the Liberal Democrats, who were forced to fight a by-election after the resignation of Louise Alexander.
The announcement was made at around noon on Friday (May 2) at the ExCeL centre in Royal Docks.
New councillor Mr Snowdon, an Isle of Dogs resident, said: "I thought it was a good result. It's a reflection of all the hard work we've been doing over the last five years.
"The Conservatives are very much the people's party on the Island. We represent local residents and fight for the people on local issues. I intend to continue to fight for the local community."
The Conservatives gained 2,133 votes in yesterday's election (Thursday), compared to 1,724 in 2006. They increased their share of the vote from 43.8 per cent to approximately 49.7 per cent. Labour's Doros Ullah finished second with 1,421 votes. Liberal Democrat Mohammed Nasir Uddin fought off a challenge from the British National Party's Jeffrey Marshall to finish third.
Labour were jubilant after claiming Weavers ward from the Liberal Democrats, with candidate Fazlul Haque claiming 1,421 votes. The Liberal Democrat candidate John Griffiths attracted 930 votes in second place.
Incoming councillor Mr Haque said: "It's an auspicious occasion as we've made a significant gain in Weavers ward which is generally a strong Lib Dem area. I'm looking forward to helping to make improvements for the people of the area who have put their faith in me."

David Snowdon is the most awful person I have ever met. He is a self-serving sycophant whose only values - if he can be said to have such things - concern the necessity for his own promotion.
The fact that this type of individual can rise to a position of any power does a severe injustice to the minority of politicians who are involved because they care, and undermines the entire political debate, which is reduced to a fatuous argument between inflated personalities.
I despair.
