IT’S OFFICIAL – you get the world’s best reception here in Canary Wharf.

Markus Mormels, who works at the Westferry Circus-based Four Seasons Hotel, has just been crowned international receptionist of the year.

Markus, who lives in South Quay, went head-to-head against 11 other finalists representing luxury hotels from across the globe.

The final decision took place in Dubai, with each receptionist taking part in role-play scenarios with difficult guests and demands, followed up with a gruelling question-and-answer session with an expert panel from the hotel and tourism industry.

Markus, who is originally from Costa Rica, said: “The panel was cold as ice. You really couldn’t tell if they liked you or not. It was a real honour to win. They said my delivery and confidence were good and I had a strong knowledge of the hotel and passion for my job. I think I’m a good communicator, I listen to the guests and I can think on my feet.”

The annual event is organised by the Amicale Internationale des Chefs et Sous Directeurs des Grands Hotel (international association for front office managers and assistant hotel managers for four and five star hotels), which was founded in 1964.

It now has an international fellowship of more than 12 countries.

Markus scooped the British title back in December, fighting off competition from 32 other UK concierges.
He was thrilled to be given the chance to visit Dubai during the final contest, and, luckily, it wasn’t all hard work.

He managed to visit a seven-star hotel in the desert with its own ski slope, dine along Dubai’s man-made creek and party with belly dancers.

And he can look forward to joining the judging panel next year when, as this year’s winner, he helps decide the 2009 victor at the finals in Monaco.
