THE GOLF Show delievered its usual mix of fun, fashion and big names when it rolled into Docklands.

The annual golfing extravaganza at ExCeL London last weekend always attracts big crowds and this year was no exception with thousands heading to the Royal Docks venue.

A sprinkling of celebrities added to the fun with two Ronnies – diminutive comedian Ronnie Corbett and former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson – both at the show.

Also taking in the sights was BBC sports reporter Chris Hollins, who lined up alongside Corbett to try hitting the floating green located in the dock behind ExCeL. Hollins, there to support children’s charity Sparks, explained the appeal of the show.04MayChris.jpg

“It’s great because it broadens your horizons. You see different things, such as how to get used to putting straight, and there’s a lot of great gear to try out,” he said.

“I’m a golf addict so it’s like being a little boy in the sweet shop. You could get very poor very quickly here, there’s so much to buy.”

And Hollins, son of ex- Chelsea and Arsenal star John, revealed it was a golfing legend who provided him with his best experience as a journalist.

He said: “I interviewed Jack Nicklaus at The Open in Hoylake and I learned why he was so great. A great man, very generous with his time and his thoughts.”

For mere mortals the feats of Nicklaus are just a dream but visitors to the show could improve their games by taking advantage of the expert tuition on offer. There were even prizes to be won for the more competitive, including one for sinking a 100ft putt.

The fashion-conscious had a wide range of stylish clothing to sample, including designs by top player Ian Poulter.

Meanwhile, the very well-heeled could invest in a Hummer-style golf cart. But at a cool £7,000, these mini electric versions of the iconic vehicles could make for a very expensive round.
