The fans' roar
Millwall News with Ian Toal
With last Saturday’s excellent 3-0 home win over promotion chasing Carlisle United, the Lions have secured their position in League for next season with just one more game to go.
This was one of our best performances of the season, partly because we capitalised on our chances, something we have failed to do regularly enough this season.
The inspiration for the performance came from Millwall’s all-time leading league scorer, Neil Harris, who set up two goals and scored another in a man-of-the-match performance that reminded many fans of our former striker Teddy Sheringham.
Unfortunately, it seems that was almost certainly Harris’ last home game in a Millwall shirt, as manager Kenny Jackett had previously said the frontman’s contract would not be renewed for next season.
Chopper Harris has been a favourite for a long time but recently a few supporters have started to question whether he deserves another contract. Saturday’s sublime performance demonstrated to many of the doubters that he still has the ability to play at this level.
If he could replicate performances like that regularly he would definitely deserve a contract and would continue to be a big asset to the club.
But it would take a huge about turn for Harris to be offered a contract as Jackett would effectively be admitting he was wrong.
Saturday’s game was, therefore, an opportunity for Millwall supporters to celebrate an important win while at the same time honouring a Millwall legend.
If this is Harris’ last season, it will be with a great parting shot for fans to remember his Millwall career.
Now Jackett knows which division we will be playing in next season his attention will turn to the playing staff.
With a dozen or so players out of contract during this summer some tough decisions will have to be made. Along with this, Jackett has to decide which loan signings, if any, he will try to keep at the club.
Three loanees, Jay Simpson, Jem Karacan and Tony Craig, would improve our squad but whether they fit within the budget will be a factor to consider.
For the time being, though, Millwall fans can relax, knowing the club has not slipped into the fourth rung of professional football.
