WHILE most nature photographers go to the far-flung reaches of the world to find beauty, a Docklands artist finds her subjects much closer to home, writes Rob Virtue.

Anna Hillman, who has a studio at Trinity Buoy Wharf, will have her work displayed in Greenwich for five weeks.

Called Amazingness the exhibition gives an alternative view of nature-focused photography.
It looks at the urban plantlife around parts of London most art-lovers would not give a second glance.

Anna said: "You don’t have to go somewhere beautiful to see beauty, it’s all around. You don’t notice at first but if you look closer, you can.

“When I wander about and see growing things it makes me happy and makes me think the world is really amazing and helps me respect it more. Through my photography I’m trying to promote that message.”

Anna, who is a design graduate from Goldsmiths and also has a zoology degree, began taking pictures when she was nine.

Over the last three years, she has taken her passion more seriously and her work has been exhibited alongside other artists.

Tomorrow will see the opening of her first solo exhibition, which is at the Viewfinder Photography Gallery in Greenwich.

However, although it is solo in name, Anna will be inviting visitors who have been inspired by her work to send their own photos along the Amazingness concept.

Anna, who is 33 and lives in New Cross, said: “In exhibitions people say they noticed this plant or that plant, so I say send a photo to me. The participation aspect is important. In trying to show people the world I see they begin to notice things.”

The exhibition will run from May 31 to July 6 at the Viewfinder gallery within Linear House, which is just off Royal Hill, near Greenwich DLR and Rail.

Children’s workshops will run on June 8 from 10am-midday and at the same times on June 14.
