Thames cycle bridge will need big investment

THE proposed Thames Bridge needs a big pot of private investment if it is to get off the ground, say transport chiefs.

As revealed in The Wharf, cyclists and pedestrians would be able to use the link to get from Southwark to Canary Wharf.

However, the structure will cost £65million and Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity behind the idea, now needs to find groups to fund the scheme.

Last week, a Sustrans spokeswoman said the cost would be split between Transport for London (TfL), local authorities from either side of the river and business groups.

A TfL spokeswoman said that while it would support the scheme, it would be unlikely to go ahead without the backing of private investors.

“In principle we’re supportive but £65m is a lot of money,” she said. “So Sustrans is going to have to look at where to get that money from.”

The cash that the local authorities of Southwark and Tower Hamlets can spend on transport actually comes from the TfL budget, so the transport body wants support from London’s business community. But TfL, which funded the feasibility study for the bridge, remains a long-term fan of the idea.

“We are continuing to work with Sustrans to develop a business case for the bridge and will review the results of this once available,” added the spokeswoman.

The first designs for the bridge were featured last week in The Wharf and revealed a vertical lift system, which will reduce waiting times when boats are passing through.

The bridge would link Durand’s Wharf on the south bank of the river to Westferry Road on the Isle of Dogs. It would reach the island 300 metres below Westferry Circus and provide easy access to Canary Wharf.

Following the release of the feasibility study, Carl Pittam, Sustrans’ director for London, said: “The study is crucial as it tells us that the bridge is feasible, the location is right and puts the real figure against its cost.”

The date of completion of the bridge will depend on funding and it is not expected to be in place until after 2012.
