Siemens Building Technologies has taken over the upkeep of all electronic security equipment in the area.

The company won the one-year contract, worth an undisclosed amount, in January following a competitive tendering process.

It has put a dedicated team of engineers in place to manage the security systems, and is responsible for the effective operation of CCTV, vehicle scanning equipment and automatic number plate readers, as well as body scanners.

A spokeswoman for Siemens Building Technologies said: “The contract is for the maintenance of the existing investment made by Canary Wharf Management over the years.

“It’s purely for the upkeep of existing equipment and does not include the introduction of any new technology.

“Of course, as equipment ages it is important to take a look at it and we would give advice to Canary Wharf Group about anything that needed to be looked at.”

Mike Walker, Canary Wharf Management’s security technical director, said: “For such a high profile business as Canary Wharf we need the very best security systems in place.

“We spent considerable time talking to suppliers and were won over by Siemens’ professionalism and commitment to what is an extremely demanding list of requirements.”

Siemens Building Technologies managing director Peter Hawksworth said: “This is a prestigious contract to have won against intense competition.

“Canary Wharf continues to develop and expand and we will provide both immediate on-the-ground technical support as well as a continuous upgrade path that will bring in the latest technological developments.

“All our work will ensure that the area continues to have at its disposal some of the most sophisticated hi-tech security capabilities in the UK.”

The contract is up for renewal at the end of the year.
