Fans roar
Millwall View by Ian Toal
With the results going as they did this past weekend, this Saturday’s match at home to Gillingham has got to be our biggest match since the FA Cup Final in 2004.
We are in desperate danger of getting relegated and the only thing that has probably given us hope of staying up is that Crewe and Gillingham have not taken full advantage of our poor form.
The same old problem reared its ugly head again at Bournemouth: a young midfield devoid of experience, muscle and guile unable to take hold of the game, meaning the strikers have to live off scraps.
When we do have a chance placed in our laps we go and miss a penalty and then – even worse – miss the
follow-up sitter from six yards.
Manager Kenny Jackett last week was quoted as saying he could see us winning all of the last six games!
Unfortunately, supporters themselves are looking at the remaining fixtures and are worried that we can’t find the two wins we probably require to stay up.
For a squad with one of the highest wage bills in the division we have had a poor season but we have definitely been hampered by having 10-15 injured players for the majority of the season.
As we have not been able to field anything near a first-choice team it is hard to tell how good or poor a side we really are and, if we stay up, how we will fare next season. That’s not really important at the moment though; we just need to get those wins and soon.
This week I’ve had supporters of other clubs ask me how good a manager Jackett is and how much of a chance he will get at Millwall.
As Jackett has been so hampered by injuries he really should be given a go into next season to see how good he is at moulding a promotion chasing team, and only then would it be fair to judge him.
Away from the club, ex-player Brian Horne, who was our goalkeeper in our short stop in the top flight, had a much better week with his club Chelmsford City where he coaches the goalkeepers.
Chelmsford all but secured the Ryman Premier Division Championship with a good away win at Tonbridge Angels.
Brian’s father still goes to all the home Millwall matches and Brian himself writes a page in the programme so we are going to clutch at some straws and desperately hope that Brian’s success will rub off against Gillingham this weekend.
