Design with a twist at the former London Arena
A TWISTING tower could be the flagship building in new plans for the London Arena site.
The distinctive design was unveiled this week as part of revised proposals for the Crossharbour site.
Developer Ballymore received planning permission for an office, residential and commercial space in October last year, but is pushing for a new design to take advantage of views around the site.
The altered scheme will also dump the proposed office space in favour of more hotel rooms and retail floorspace. The new design will increase the number of residential units to 1,111.
Tower Hamlets planners had approved the development of eight buildings, ranging from seven to 43 storeys. The scheme was to provide 1,057 residential units, 25,838 square metres of offices, a 149-room hotel and a 10,238 square metre apart-hotel, as well as community facilities and public open space.
Ballymore has since commissioned architects Skidmore Owings and Merrill to redesign the northern courtyard element of the scheme and a main tower.
The venue opened in 1989 and was demolished in 2006. It hosted stars such as Pink Floyd and various sports teams.
