What a weekend for Millwall fans
Last weekend was a great one for Lions fans.
We got a massively important and unexpected win at league leaders Swansea, the teams around us in the table dropped points, West Ham got thrashed 4-0 for the third match running, Chelsea and Man Utd got embarrassed in the best domestic cup competition in the world and Bermondsey boxer David Haye sent Swansea boy Enzo Maccarinelli packing in just two rounds at The O2 in front of many ecstatic Lions fans.
The 2-1 win for Millwall last Friday (March 7) is by far our best win this season and came at a much needed time.
Unfortunately there were only 142 of us Millwall supporters there to witness the battling performance thanks to the decision of the local police to switch the match for the second time in two seasons.
Switching the game to a Friday did have the benefit of being home on Saturday morning to watch and laugh at the sad Charlton fans of the week on Soccer AM, though!
Back to our game and a massive expectant home crowd turned up at the Liberty Stadium sure that the Swans would break their unbeaten league record of 19 matches held since 1971.
This wasn’t to be, although as one Millwall supporter said to me after the game, “…this is just typical of Millwall – we don’t like anyone to have a party at our expense… we’ve spoilt parties before and will do so again!”
The result must have been especially pleasing for manager Kenny Jackett on his return to the club he parted company with just 13 months ago. He had the last laugh over the home fans who taunted him during the match.
The important thing is to now follow that great result up with results against teams lower down the table to ease us away from the relegation spots.
Away from the pitch, the deadline for the nomination for the Fan on the Board position closed at the end of February and we did briefly have two candidates for the position until one gave it more thought and realised he could not devote the time required for the role and withdrew his nomination.
That left the remaining candidate, the current fan director Pete Garston, to be re-elected unopposed for this important position.
The fact that he has carried his role out in a dignified and professional manner, airing the supporters’ views right at the top level, and instigated many better practices, means that many fans recognised that he was a great candidate for continuing his good work and thus did not stand themselves.
Long may the good work continue as the fan director and Millwall Supporters Club are a great benefit to Millwall fans and, on the whole, have an influence not seen at other clubs.
