Police are offering a £20,000 reward for information on the stabbing of Darren Sherman in Manchester Road five years ago tomorrow (March 7).

Darren’s parents Rosemarie Belle and James Sherman marked the anniversary by issuing an appeal to anyone who can help close the investigation.

Rosemarie said: “It’s been five years since Darren was taken from us, and we still don’t know what happened to our son. I just want some closure on this now.”

Darren and his girlfriend had moved into a flat in Alice Shepherd House just two and a half weeks before his murder. The 22-year-old is believed to have become involved in a row with two men near his home at 11.30pm, and was stabbed several times. He died shortly afterwards at the Royal London Hospital.
Rosemarie said: “People say it gets easier in time, but it doesn’t. In fact, it gets worse. I visit my son’s grave every other Sunday. He has a little sister who misses him tremendously.
“Darren came from a loving family, and he had his whole life ahead of him. He had a
girlfriend, and was working as a carpet fitter with his dad in west London. We don’t know the circumstances of his death, but somebody must know something.”
Investigators are keen to track down one-time Mellish Street resident Ibrahim Bangura in connection with the incident. The 25-year-old was believed to have fled the country for his native Sierra Leone but police say he may have returned to the UK. He is featured on the Metropolitan Police’s “12 Most Wanted” list.
Darren’s father said: “Darren was my only son and he worked with me for three years. He was a very outgoing guy and he was his own man. This was a nasty and cowardly murder.
“There are people out there who know what happened to my son. If anybody has a heart and can
understand what it’s like to lose a child, they should come forward with a little bit of information. Without Ibrahim Bangura, this case will never be solved.”
Det Insp Tim Wilkinson said: “There are undoubtedly people on the Isle of Dogs who know more than I do about where Mr Bangura is, and I want them to pick up a telephone. I hope that the passage of time is working for us in this case, and not against us. This family deserve to know exactly what happened.”
