Dan Bourke's Concrete Pencil - The meaty goodness of opinion, sandwiched between News and Sport

IT couldn’t be more exciting. It’s the talk of the office, of the whole Wharf.

You know what I’m talking about: Leon.

A new sandwich place, offering food that’s really different from other stuff here.
And not just sandwiches. Other stuff too. Real food.

I’m so excited about it I don’t know what to write next. So here we go, in no particular order.

* Fine hot chilli chicken wraps.

* It’s open till 10pm. 10pm! I could have it for lunch OR tea. Or BOTH!

* It’s down escalators so you don’t even have to use the stairs! And it’s under the DLR, thus avoiding the cold platform hall.

*The coffee is great!

*I’ve got so many new sandwiches to try out and then assimilate to my Top Five Wharf Sandwiches List. And my Top Five Warm Wharf Sandwiches List. And my Top Five Wharf Salad list. And my Top Five Wharf Vegetarian Sandwiches list. And my Top Five Wharf Hangover Sandwiches list.

I don’t know where to start.

Meatballs!

I’m looking forward to being hungover so I can go mad in there.

On the window, there’s a quote from Giles Coren from The Times saying “it’s the future of food” or something.
You said it, my friend.

Maybe they want a quote from a more local journalist, a more sandwich-obsessed journalist, a journalist more respected by the sandwich fans of the Wharf.

Imagine the honour of having one’s name on the wall of your favourite lunch bar. It would be as good as having my name up on the wall of Davy’s (which, by the way, I have, several times. Which I never tire of showing any and everyone).

So, what can I say to get my words up in paint on the hallowed glass?

“Quite simply the best sandwich place on the Wharf.”

But how could I show my face in Birley’s again? I couldn’t in all honesty go and get another beef and cheddar sandwich in my life. That’s too high a sacrifice, even for fame on this level.

Hmmm. “Sandwich heaven” is too much of a cliche even for me.

“It’s quite literally a lunch-gasm.”

“Food that towers over Canary Wharf.” (Towers, as in skyscrapers, see?)

“Simply Wharfunderful.”

“Leon is really lovely.”

I’m too excited to think. I need some meatballs.

Editor’s note: Dan Bourke does not work for Leon. As far as we know.
