Charlton's nicky weaver believes it's not over yet
Nicky Weaver believes Charlton’s luck is about to change.
The Addicks have not enjoyed the best of fortunes recently, culminating in three defeats in a row.
But goalkeeper Weaver, who was beaten by a fluke goal against Ipswich on Saturday, says that’s all about to end, starting tomorrow (Friday) against West Bromwich Albion at The Valley.
“I think we can still go up,” said confident keeper Weaver. "We’ve had our bad run now.
“We’ve got to look forward to the match at West Brom, which will not be easy, but we’ve got the players to do it and hopefully we can cement our place in the play-offs.”
Charlton are now two points out of the play-off positions and stuck in ninth – the lowest the team have been this season.
But the 29-year-old former Manchester City goalkeeper says results have been so inconsistent for all Championship teams that Charlton’s destiny is still in their own hands.
“The league has been so tight this year,” said Weaver. “The team that goes down will have a record high number of points and the team that goes up will have a record low number of points.
“The points are getting shared out among all the teams, and it’s so tight up at the top.
“Everyone keeps saying we’ve been unlucky, but, at the end of the day, we have to turn it round, start getting the goals and keeping clean sheets.”
Weaver said he is hoping to forget the disappointment of the Ipswich defeat at Portman Road, when an Owen Garvan cross flew past the keeper to set Charlton’s promotion rivals on their way to a 2-0 victory.
“I’m disappointed at being beaten from such a bizarre angle,” said Weaver. “The ball didn’t have a true flight and it moved a bit. It was freakish. It’s gone in off the post – an inch the other way and it would have stayed out.
“And it’s that margin which decides whether you win or lose.”
