Roadworks cause isle of dogs standstill
ISLE of Dogs roads have been brought to a standstill by a spate of maintenance closures.
Marsh Wall has been reduced to a one-way street as work began to expand South Quay DLR station.
Traffic has also been disrupted by closures at Manchester Road, Westferry Road and Spindrift Avenue.
Journey times of up to 25 minutes for the short hop from The Space arts centre to Docklands Sailing Centre in Westferry Road have been reported. Bus services have been disrupted.
Island resident Rita Bensley said: “It was chock-a-block at the weekend and you couldn’t go anywhere. It’s a crazy situation because a lot of people rely on the buses.”
Marsh Wall was shut off to westbound traffic on January 21 and will be closed for 18 months while the DLR is adjusted for three-car trains.
Manchester Road is being dug up for the second time in four years to replace the road surface, while EDF Energy is installing new power cables in Spindrift Avenue and Westferry Road.
A council spokesman said the authority could not stop other works taking place while Marsh Wall was closed, but would look at improving signage on the A13 and Aspen Way.
