Paper cd case to cut down on plastic
A DOCKLANDS company believes it has created a CD case to turn both the film industry and pop music green.
BNW, based on the Isle of Dogs, has developed a case made completely out of paper for DVDs and CDs, which it hopes will stop the big media industries using so much plastic.
Although there are other paper-based CD cases on the market, BNW believes its product is of a much higher quality.
It follows another ‘green’ CD cover idea we featured last September from the Island – recycled crisp packets.
That move came from electro-rock band ReCoup, who collected the foil packets, washed them and turned them inside-out for their new use.
For the latest idea, BNW believes, as a rough estimate, the cost of making the paper CD cases is 3.5p each. “You can’t recycle plastic without polluting the planet and it involves a lot of work,” said a spokesman for the firm.
“And one of the myths with CDs are that you need a lot of protection – they don’t, the memory is stored inside.”
However, BNW still needs investment to develop the business idea. The company believes there are about five years left in the CD market until it is all replaced by computer chip technology, so it has some time left to bring in the cash.
“Oil goes up in price and so does the price of plastic, so there’s a good case for paper,” said the spokesman.
The company started working on the idea around 18 months ago and has a patent pending.
