Deptford weekend market opening in april
PLANS for Deptford’s new food, art and fashion market are on track for an April launch.
The weekend market is the latest stage in Deptford’s attempt to shake off its ramshackle image and rebrand itself as a creative hub and visitor destination.
Last week saw the delivery of a 35-tonne, 57-seater railway carriage which is to act as the Deptford development’s headquarters.
The carriage is being glammed up with graffiti and will house a cafe, funky bistro and
information point, with the weekend market rising around it.
Deptford railway station and its Grade II-listed Victorian carriage ramp are also being
sensitively restored as part of the project.
Tara Munro, spokesperson for Revitalising Deptford, said: “The carriage represents what Deptford’s fast growing creative community is all about, revamping and using what’s already there to inspire and energise in a positive way.”
The South East Train carriage was saved from the scrapyard and made its way from Essex,
edging towards Deptford at a painstaking two miles an hour.
The market is set to open mid-April with about 50 vendors selling high quality foods, art and craft.
It will complement Deptford’s existing traditional market and there are plans for film and music events for the area to take place throughout 2008.
Deptford is already home to a thriving creative commune around its Creekside area,
including the dozens of artists and designers based at Cockpit Arts studios.
